PWA stands for Patients Welfare Association, which is a non-political students activity concerned solely with the welfare of the poor and needy patients of Civil Hospital, Karachi. PWA was founded in 1979 by only three medical students of DMC, who felt the need of doing something for those who cannot do anything for themselves. This small organization, soon, by the hard work & sincerity of its workers, turned out to be an exemplary organization of its kind. Today, hundreds of dedicated students of DMC are working enthusiastically for the welfare of the poor patients through this association. PWA has been serving the poor patients of the country for the past fifteen years by providing the following services free of cost:

DRUG BANK Drug Bank was PWA's first project that started in 1979. Uptil now Drug Bank has provided medicines worth Rs. 8.33 million to the needy patients of the hospital.
VOLUNTARY BLOOD BANK Voluntary Blood Bank established in 1982. It remains open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It works on exchange basis with no charge of any kind. Here a highly effective modern screening protocol is employed and each & every pint of blood is properly screened for HBV, HIV, Venereal disease etc. It has provided more than 121,023 pints of healthy, disease free blood to patients. PWA holds regular blood donation camps.
BLOOD FRACTION UNIT PWA blood bank is also providing blood fractioning services through which only the required component of blood is provided to the patient rather than the whole blood. It includes:
1. CRYOFUGE introduced in 1984.
2. CELL SEPARATER introduced in 1994

FOLLOW-UP TUBERCULSIS CLINIC Follow-up Tuberculous clinic was established in 1984 to help the poor patients suffering from TB. Its aim is to provide free medicines to the patients of TB who cannot afford the treatment on their own. The average cost of treatment per patient is from Rs.3000 to Rs. 4500.
DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORY Diagnostic laboratory was established in 1986. It carries out several important biochemical tests . It also runs Malarial Parasite Detection Service. The Laboratory has done 278,588 tests uptil now.
